Marmite Vegan Cheese Straws

I love these cheese straws for holiday parties and big gatherings when we need a lot of little elegant bites. Crispy, flakey, and oh so umami—Marmite Yeast Extract stands in for that missing foundation in many vegan cheeses. Everyone loves these little stick snacks and can’t help going back for more. Who knew Marmite wasn’t just for toast?

Savory Cheese Straws (Makes 32 pieces, serving 8-10 people)
1-package vegan puff pastry
3 tbsp Earth Balance Buttery Spread or other vegan butter
1/4 cup Marmite Yeast Extract
1/3 cup nutritional yeast flour for dusting.

On a lightly floured work surface, roll each sheet of puff pastry out to make about an inch longer on each side. Spread 2 tbsp marmite and 1 1/2 tbsp Earth Balance Buttery Spread on each of the 2 sheets of puff pastry. Sprinkle each with a half of the nutritional yeast. Fold each sheet of puff pastry over lengthways and press gently. Cut into 1/2 inch wide strips, then cut each strip in half lengthwise and twist.

Arrange on a baking sheets and chill until ready to go in the oven. Bake for 7-10 minutes at 400°, until golden and puffed up.
